Mina makes the ultimate sacrifice by replacing Shim Cheong as the Sea God’s bride. Her ocean side village has been plagued by storms, wars and flood for almost 100 years. Each year her country sacrifices a young woman to the Sea God as a hope to appease him. Mina arrives in the spirit world with the goal to marry him and save her people. Once she realizes that the Sea God is under an enchantment, she makes it her mission to save him. She meets other gods and goddesses, spirits and other mythical creatures.

I loved this book. I am a huge fan of myth retellings especially when they are as charming as this one. I read Oh’s book XOXO and adored it. Her writing style is charming and wonderful. As I was reading it, I empathized with Mina and felt connected to her. I have nothing but good things to say about this book. As I was reading, I felt as if I was in the story with Mina.

I really enjoyed all of the characters. They were all well rounded and I felt connected to them. I also really enjoyed the main themes of the story. Mina makes most of her choices out of her love and faith for others. Even when she struggles in There were some portions that reminded me of Spirited Away. While that is not my favorite Studio Ghibli movie, I do find the story and themes incredibly moving. It is interesting how Oh used these influences in the story, the way she describes the empty markets of the spirit world and the use of dragons. Both stories are beautiful in their own right and it was nice to see that influence in the novel.

Again, thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Children’s Publishing Group for the eARC of the ebook! The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is out today, February 22, 2022, I will link websites where you can purchase the book.

Until next time!
