May 2021 Owl Crate Unboxing

Updated: Aug 15, 2021

Hello everyone!

Another month, another Owl Crate unboxing! This month’s theme was “Expect the Unexpected”. There was lots of cool stuff that I can’t wait to talk about.

Let’s get into it!

The first item in the box was a Rules of Wolves Square scarf from Out of Print. I have only read Shadow and Bone from the Grishaverse but I’ve heard really great things about the following two duologies. Rules of Wolves is, I believe, the last book of the Grishaverse. I came out recently and seems to be getting a bunch of good reviews. I’ve recently been getting into the trend of wearing head bands and I think this one is super cute. It makes me want to read the rest of the Grisha books!

The next item for this month was an Obsidio inspired Corduroy bag with calligraphy by Studio Kyra Calligraphy. I love tote bags especially multiuse bags; this one has a crossbody strap and regular straps. I think its super cute. Also, shout out to my sister, Kaylee, and our dog Rexy for modelling the bag for me.

This month there was a sticker in the box. It was inspired by The Gilded Wolves from Lion in the Trees. I love stickers almost as much as I love pins. This one is super interesting. I have a copy of The Gilded Wolves from Book of the Month that I need to read. BOTM really gets you with the add-on books for $10. Its such a deal I usually end up with more than one book a month.

Next there was a Pixel & Ink metal bookmark with quotes from Scythe and The Fifth Season and it has a tassel. I have to admit I just recently started using actual bookmarks. I usually use whatever scrap of paper I can find and use that. But Amy, from Authentically Amy Reads, made me some cute bookmarks recently so I’ve been using those way more frequently. This is the only metal bookmark I have but its sturdy and really pretty.

There was a collectable book tin designed by Forensics and Flowers inspired by Grey London from A Darker Shade of Magic series. I haven’t read this series but I did buy 2/3 books for my dad for Christmas this past year. Its yet another fantasy series on my tbr. I love the tin. It looks great on my shelf with my other books and I like that I can put whatever I want in it.

This month’s book was The Ones We’re Meant to Find by Joan He. Like always, there was an Owl Crate exclusive edition with exclusive end pages, a note from the author, and signed by the author. The description on the fold says,

It’s been three years and seventeen days since Cee woke up on the shore of an abandoned island. She has no idea how she came to be marooned or what her life was like before. She has only the rickety house by the sea, the android she built for company, and a single memory: Somewhere beyond the horizon, she has a sister, and it’s up to Cee to escape the island to find her.

A world away, sixteen-year-old STEM prodigy Kasey is also looking to escape- from the science she once believed in and from her home. The eco-cities, Earth’s last unpolluted habitats, are meant to be a sanctuary for those from deserving lineages, for those committed to planetary protection, but instead they’re populated by people willing to do anything for refuge – even lie. After a series of manmade disasters rock the planet, Kasey must decide if she’s ready to use science to help humanity, even though it failed the people who mattered most to her.

From Joan He, the critically acclaimed author of Descendent of the Crane, comes a stunning science fiction novel with mind-blowing twists.

Surprisingly, I finished the book early in the month. I have to admit I didn’t really like it. I will go more in depth with my reasons in my monthly recap but sci-fi isn’t one of my favorite genres and I didn’t particularly care for this book. However, this is a gorgeous edition of the book. The colors are just so beautiful. It makes me a bit bummed that I didn’t enjoy it.

The monthly pin was themed to The Ones We’re Meant to Find and was by Icey Designs. While the book wasn’t my favorite, the pin is very pretty. As you know, I’m a sucker for a good pin and the monthly pins are just too cute.

I really enjoyed this month’s box. It had a bunch of cool items that are super unique and useful. I can’t wait to wear the bandana. Next month’s theme is Go Your Own Way. I did see that because of shipping issues both the June and July boxes will be delayed, which is a bit of a bummer. But I can’t wait to see what goodies we get.

Until next time!
